“Zen Circle” ZENGA

Jun 2002

The title refers to drawings made with a single brush stroke by Zen monks. Perhaps the most famous are those by Hakuin Ekaku, but others have produced many similar drawings, which have arbitrarily been interpreted as expressing the Zen view of the world and the cosmos. If the interpretations are going to be arbitrary anyway, then the Zen thing to do, it seemed to me, was to simply to draw the universe as is.
