Maruyama Okyo is famous for his paintings of ghosts, but Kawanabe Kyosai and Ito Seiu also produced many such images. This series is an homage to those earlier masters of ghost paintings. The series draws on the stories of such women as Oiwa, Okiku, and Kasane, and portrays uniquely Japanese sources of terror, such as the deeply held grudge (onnen) and unbridled passion (jonen), in a contemporary manner.
