Picture of Five Rings Earth

1140x490x100mm 2009 Black Gesso, Acrylic, Lacquer, wood,

mounting, string, acrylic stick, A nail-head-covering ornament,

A decorative weight for a kakemono

All five pieces

A work inspired by Miyamoto Musashi's “The Book of Five Rings“. In the Book of Five Rings, Musashi thoroughly criticized other swordsmanship groups and criticized swordsmanship that was just form and had no content. In addition, Musashi was the last Kabukimono who disliked stability and lived freely, even from his life of hating the system of the Shogunate and fighting alone without being hired.
